Cycling mainly along cycle paths on the banks of the Tejo River, you will have the opportunity to visit some of Lisbon’s most important historical landmarks and experience the beauty of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, also known as the westernmost capital of continental Europe. Lisbon and Sagres stand as two major landmarks of the Age of Portuguese Discoveries. Leaving the capital, you will cross the Tejo River by ferry, at the very place where, over 500 years ago, Portuguese ships and caravels once departed on their epic voyages of discovery.
Later, through another ferry crossing, the itinerary leads across the Sado Estuary, formed more than 5,000 years ago and today a protected natural reserve, home to 221 bird species and often visited by dolphins. Low-traffic roads guide you through the magnificent Arrábida Natural Park, a biogenetic reserve with Mediterranean-like vegetation, sharing similarities with regions such as Dalmatia. This area shelters a remarkable diversity of wildlife, including 213 vertebrate species: amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
Cycling along quiet roads and peaceful paths, the route continues through the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, where Mediterranean, North Atlantic and African vegetation coexist. The park hosts around 750 plant species, with over 100 endemic, rare or localized, including 12 species found nowhere else in the world.
