A Medieval Storybook Village Awaiting Your Discovery
Welcome to Óbidos, one of Portugal’s most enchanting medieval towns, a place where time seems to stand still.
Enclosed by ancient castle walls, Óbidos invites you to wander through a maze of cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses covered in bougainvillea.
Small artisan shops, traditional taverns and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding hills create an atmosphere full of charm and authenticity.
Take your time to explore the castle walls or enjoy a quiet drink in the village square.
With its history, colours and unique ambiance, Óbidos sets the perfect tone for the beginning of your Atlantic cycling adventure.
Day 2 – Óbidos to Peniche (49 km)
From Medieval Hills to the Atlantic’s Rugged Edge
Leave the peaceful village of Óbidos and cycle through gently undulating landscapes dotted with orchards, vineyards and small rural communities. The scenery gradually transforms as you approach the coast: the air becomes fresher, the horizon opens, and the sound of the ocean grows stronger.
Arrive in Peniche, one of Portugal’s most iconic fishing ports.
The town is surrounded by dramatic cliffs sculpted by wind and waves, offering breathtaking viewpoints.
Visit Cabo Carvoeiro, perched above the Atlantic, where you’ll enjoy spectacular views toward the Berlengas Islands, a protected nature reserve known for its marine life and crystal-clear waters.
Peniche blends rugged beauty with vibrant fishing traditions, making it a memorable first stage along the Atlantic Route.
Day 3 – Peniche to Santa Cruz (49 km)
Golden Beaches, Marine Winds and Endless Atlantic Views
Follow one of the most scenic stretches of the Portuguese coastline.
Today’s ride takes you past Baleal and Consolação, areas shaped by powerful waves and a deep connection to the sea.
Surfers, fishermen and wide-open beaches give this region a lively yet natural atmosphere.
The landscape alternates between cliffs, dunes and long sandy beaches, with panoramic views that invite you to pause and admire the Atlantic.
As you approach Santa Cruz, limestone cliffs and rock formations rise above the sea, creating a dramatic backdrop.
Santa Cruz welcomes you with a wide golden-sand beach, fresh ocean air and an unforgettable sunset, a peaceful end to a day filled with rich coastal scenery.
Day 4 – Santa Cruz to Ericeira (33 km)
Surf Spirit, Fishing Heritage and Slow Coastal Life
Your day begins along quiet rural roads and gentle farmland before the coastline reappears on the horizon.
Arriving in Ericeira, you enter Europe’s only World Surfing Reserve, a unique blend of surf culture, centuries-old fishing traditions and charming Portuguese architecture.
Ericeira’s narrow cobbled streets, blue-and-white houses and ocean-view squares create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
It is a town that breathes the sea. Sit by the waterfront, watch surfers catching perfect waves or enjoy fresh seafood while taking in the Atlantic breeze.
Its relaxed charm and incredible coastal views make Ericeira an unforgettable stop along your journey.
Day 5 – Ericeira to Azenhas do Mar (27 km)
Cliffs, Secluded Beaches and One of Portugal’s Most Magical Villages
Today’s stage is pure coastal drama.
Cycle along rugged cliffs, quiet beaches and hidden coves that appear like natural jewels along the Atlantic.
This section of the route offers some of the most breathtaking views of the entire journey.
Your destination, Azenhas do Mar, is a village suspended on a cliff overlooking the ocean, a place that looks like it belongs on a postcard. Its white house’s cascading down the cliffside, the natural tidal pool shaped by the sea and the dramatic scenery make this a truly magical place to spend the night.
It is one of Portugal’s most photographed and admired coastal villages, and for good reason.
Day 6 – Azenhas do Mar de Cascais (33 km)
Sintra’s Wild Coast and Europe’s Westernmost Point
Continue south along Sintra’s spectacular coastline, a region where jagged cliffs meet the powerful Atlantic.
The ride to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, is one of the highlights of the journey, offering panoramic ocean views and a symbolic sense of reaching the “edge of the continent.”
The following kilometres lead you toward Cascais, an elegant seaside town known for its refined yet relaxed atmosphere.
With its marina, beautiful beaches and historic centre, Cascais offers the perfect blend of nature, sophistication and coastal charm.
A wonderful destination to celebrate the final stages of your cycling experience.
