We offer you six days walking through the most beautiful secrets of the Algarve. Because of its incredible diversity the Algarve is divided into three main regions: the South and the West Litoral facing the Atlantic, the Barrocal and the Serra that connects us to the Alentejo. We started in Sagres with a walk by the fantastic Costa Vicentina with its cliffs facing the Atlantic Ocean. Following to Monchique, the highest point in the Algarve with its luxuriant landscapes and discovering because it is nicknamed "the Algarve Garden". We walked through the mountains of Caldeirão, the walk that leads us to ancient times where life happens slowly, by the customs and traditional arts that last. We go to meet the Barrocal, the transition zone between the coast and the mountains, the main supplier of the agricultural products of the Algarve. We walk in the Natural Park of Ria Formosa, one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal. We continue out to meet ancient traces of human occupation, Alcoutim, where Portugal is bordered by Spain through the emblematic river Guadiana.

Walking Algarve Secrets

 

Day 1 - Arrival to Sagres

Arrival to the hotel in Sagres, place where you will begin the journey. Covered by the Alentejano Southwest natural park and the Vicentina coast, the Saint Vicent Cape is the further western point of Europe.

 

Day 2 - Costa Vicentina

We started our walking in Costa Vicentina Natural Park, a wild place where nature and history combine, creating impressive landscapes. For its great diversity can be observed habitats with high biodiversity of flora and fauna.

 

Day 3 - Serra de Monchique

From the majestic landscape of the Atlantic Ocean, we enter the Monchique mountains, the highest point in the Algarve, a superb walk, always accompanied by stunning views and totally different from coastal Algarve. A land of wooded hills, fragrant orchards and crystal clear springs. Often nicknamed as the "Algarve garden" for its luxuriant landscape of rolling hills, dense forests and pure rivers.

 

Day 4 - Barrocal

We meet the Barrocal, the transition zone between the coast and the mountains, covered with orange groves and fig trees, carob and almond is for that reason known as Beira-Serra and the main supplier of the agricultural products of the Algarve. The fruity and sweet aromas are a constant and can be observed in each own time the beauty of the blooming orchards and almond blossom.

 

Day 5 - Ria Formosa

By the sea we walk in the Natural Park of Ria Formosa, one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal. This park is characterized by the presence of sandy coastal dunes that protects a wide lagoon area that stretches along the coast from Ancão to Castro Marim. The combination of sweet water river with the tide of the estuary and salt marshes creates an idyllic and impressive landscape of dunes, islands and unique waterways, which is a natural refuge for life of wild birds.

 

Day 6 - Serra do Caldeirão

We walk to the mountains do Caldeirão, area that connects us to the Alentejo; these hills also called the "other Algarve" by their genuine people, by customs and traditional arts that last, for its landscapes with small villages of whitewashed houses, farm animals, by fruit and cork trees. This walk takes us to ancient times where life happens slowly.

 

Day 7 - Baixo Guadiana

We continue out to meet ancient traces of human occupation, Alcoutim, where Portugal is bordered by Spain through the emblematic river Guadiana. In Alcoutim we can enjoy the unique and tranquil beauty of the natural Algarve; know the historical and cultural heritage, an ancient heritage of past civilizations. Dolmens and menhirs testify to human presence from about 4000 BC well preserved castles and walls toasting us with the pleasure of discovery; the river Guadiana, always present, performing ancient trade routes and vast wealth shows us beautiful vessels coming from all over the world that there are waiting until new directions.

 

Day 8 - Return

Return home or stay a few more extra nights in the unique region of the Algarve.

Blessed with over 300 days of sunshine, the Algarve offers excellent temperatures to enjoy a cycling route at any time of year. Average temperatures vary between 15 degrees in January until the 30 degrees in August and 20 degrees in November.
