Cycling from Lisbon to Vila Real de Santo António provides an unforgettable journey through places full of history and culture that shaped our civilization and the world, also undergoing spectacular nature reserves where nature is revealed in all its strength and beauty. The selected routes will provide views that you will certainly keep on memories.

We suggest that you enjoy the first night to feel the life of the neighborhoods of Lisbon, including Alfama and Bairro Alto. On the first stage you will cycle on the edge of Tejo River and can visit the main historic sites of Lisbon and feel the beauty of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, which is also the capital further to the west of the European continent on the Atlantic coast. Lisbon, Sagres and Lagos are the main landmarks of the Portuguese discoveries. Also on first stage you will cross the Tejo River by ferry boat on the place where 500 years ago passed the ships and caravels of the Portuguese discoveries. Also by ferry boat, in the third stage, you will have the opportunity to cross the Sado estuary, formed more than 5000 years, currently Nature Reserve with the registration of 221 species of birds and which usually enjoys the dolphins’ presence. On your journey will pass through the Arrábida Natural Park, biogenetic reserve with maquis vegetation born of this Mediterranean-like microclimate with similarities Adriatic regions, such as Dalmatia. In which they inhabit a considerable number of species, a total of 213 vertebrate: 8 amphibians, reptiles 16, 154 birds and 35 mammals.

The following three stages will take you along the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park, where there is a mix of Mediterranean vegetation, the north Atlantic and Africa. There’s about 750 species, of which more than 100 are endemic, rare or localized; 12 there are nowhere else in the world.

At the edge of Europe, Cape St Vincent in Sagres, the most south-western point of Continental Europe, you’ll begin to cycle along the south coast line with the amazing cliffs views. You will visit Portimão and Albufeira fishing town and explore the sweet surroundings of Vilamoura. Let yourself be involved in the wonders of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a 60 km lagoon system, cycling through the Sapal area, where you are able to see a huge variety of birds and wildlife. Discover the cultural town of Faro and visit Tavira, crossing a Roman bridge over the Gilão River, the most beautiful and typical town of Algarve. The end of the program is set in Vila Real Sto António, an interesting old town on the banks of the Guadiana River which forms the border between Spain and Portugal.

Beautiful beaches, villages and quaint towns, healthy and delicious food and wine, excellent friendly and welcoming people, are a few of the ingredients that you will find along this route.

Cycling Lisbon to Vila Real de Santo António - 14 days

 

Day 1 - Arrival Lisboa (optional transfer with MegaSport from Lisbon airport to hotel)

Enjoy the glamour, history and vibrant culture of Lisbon city. (along with travel pack we provide tips for Lisbon visits).

Visit “Alfama” is one of our recommendation to find special views, history, culture and tradition in the most typical neighborhood of Lisbon.

Day 2 - Lisboa to Costa da Caparica – (21km)

Having relaxing time to enjoy the city, The journey start´s cycling along the Tejo River, a unique area offering leisure fun and culture: from Parque das Nações, along the riverfront, passing Praça do Comércio – Lisbon’s most iconic square. The way to Belém is perfect to enjoy the architecture, variety of museums, monuments, gardens, cafés and restaurants, and is also nice to taste the pastéis de Belém – Lisbon’s world famous egg tart pastries.
You will leave Lisbon In Belém, taking a ferry boat to Trafaria and have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful view over Lisbon and reach Trafaria. The end of this stage is set near the Beach of Costa da Caparica.

Day 3 - Costa da Caparica to Setúbal – (59km)

A day full of nature and adventure, with plenty to see and feel. We highlight the Arrábida Natural Park, in the north shore of the Sado River. Crossing the Arrábida hills, not missing two of the park's famous beaches - Portinho da Arrábida and Figueirinha, or the panoramic view of the two beaches at the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Arrábida. The overnight will be in Setúbal, a city with many points of interest. We recommend you to visit the fish market do Livramento, which In 2015 was considered one of the most famous fish markets in the world.

 

Day 4 - Setúbal to Sines – (76km)

The cycling stage start with a ferry boat trip through the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve, where usually the ferries users are welcomed by the resident population of bottlenose dolphins. A rare phenomenon in the worldwide and unique in Portugal. This biologically rich area have also more than 250 avian species that can been seen during your boat trip. Sado Region is also characterized by the number of rice fields under cultivation. After landing, the cycling journey starts in the peninsula of Troia, great beach, beautiful landscape of the Arrábida Hills. The Roman ruins from 1st century can be visited on the way to Sines.

Now in the Alentejo, a stunning region mostly flat. The plains full of wildflowers, sunflowers, vineyards and admirable beaches with crystalline waters and endless sandy areas. Some of these beaches are among the best ones in the country. The Alentejo villages are characterized by the whitewashed houses and the cities with great charm and rich history. The legacy from past times and civilizations, can be seen in its rich inheritance it houses impressive castles, Visigothic churches, Roman constructions fragments and even Paleolithic engravings. The prehistoric Alentejo was an active place and currently it is still possible to see numerous megaliths on it. The traditional cuisine is diverse with meat, fish and seafood, many types of cheese and good Alentejo wines.

 

Day 5 - Sines to Vila Nova de Mil Fontes – (40km)

The first day at the Southwest and Costa Vicentina Natural Park: the finest preserved stretch of European coastline. It will be a day filled with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, beautiful beaches, small fishing villages and harbor’s. Portinho do Canal sunset is a great moment to keep in memories.

 

Day 6 - Vila Nova de Milfontes to Aljezur – (71km)

Second day at Costa Vicentina Natural Park enjoying the peaceful nature with various and unique species of animal and plant life within the beautiful landscapes, marked by high cliffs hiding sandy coves and dunes.
You will reach Aljezur, a small coastal village with typical houses from the rural architecture of the Algarve. At the top of the hill, the castle ramparts with an incredible cascade of houses going down the slope, reminding us the historical past.

 

Day 7 - Aljezur to Sagres – (63km)

Now at Algarve region, you have plenty of reasons to enjoy it well. Sagres is one of the most important areas in the Algarve in terms of its exceptionally rich heritage (ranging from the fortress to ancient menhirs). Its significance to world history is tremendous, testified by a wealth of historical events, stories and legends. The high cliffs rise nearly vertically from the Atlantic to a height of 75 meters with an exuberant marine life. A visit to the lighthouse at St. Vincent Cape and watching the beautiful sunset in the southwestern most point of Portugal and Europe is recommend.

 

Day 8 - Cabo São Vicente to Lagos (49 km)

Cycling through the quiet roads and trails you will travel your way involved in magnificent cliff landscape environment.

 

Day 9 - Lagos to Portimão (31 km)

Starting the day visiting the splendid city of Lagos, which was remarkable for the Portuguese Discoveries, follow the path to the magnificent city of Portimão, through admirable Ria de Alvor.

 

Day 10 - Portimão to Albufeira (48 km)

The quiet roads and tracks will guide you through small villages and traditional cafés where you can taste delicacies of the region.

 

Day 11 - Albufeira to Faro (48 km)

With a route characterized by quiet trails, scroll down this path with a magnificent natural surroundings and typical piscatorial customs.

 

Day 12 - Faro to Tavira (42 km)

Cycling in a track mostly through the Ria Formosa Natural Park, let yourself be involved by the senses of this natural wonder of Portugal.

 

Day 13 - Tavira to Vila Real de Santo António (34 or 68 km)

Pedaling along the coast the route offers exceptional views of the Atlantic Ocean and contact with a culture known for its fishing for Tuna.

 

Day 14 - Return to Faro

Transfer (optional) with MegaSport from Tavira to the airport for your return home or stay a few more extra nights in the unique region of the Algarve.
