The Barrocal is the transition zone between the Algarve coast and the mountain ranges, forming a distinct sub-region that stretches longitudinally across the Algarve, with a wider central area and narrower ends. The landscape is dominated by orange groves, as well as fig, carob and almond trees, which is why this region is known as Beira-Serra and considered the main agricultural supplier of the Algarve.
From a geological perspective, the Barrocal is characterized by a series of irregular limestone formations, locally known as barrocos, which rarely exceed 400 metres in altitude, shaping a unique and gently undulating terrain.
This area is also rich in biodiversity, hosting healthy populations of wildlife such as the Little Owl, Barn Owl, European hedgehog, various passerine birds, bat species, and even some specimens of the Bonelli’s eagle.
