The Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park is located on the southwest coast of Portugal and stretches for approximately 110 km along the Atlantic Ocean. This protected area is one of the most biodiverse regions in Europe, where Mediterranean vegetation, North Atlantic influences and African flora come together. The park is home to around 750 plant species, of which more than 100 are endemic, rare or locally restricted, and 12 species exist nowhere else in the world.
One of the most remarkable features of the park is its dramatic sea cliffs, which serve as nesting grounds for several bird species, including the white stork, peregrine falcon and red-billed chough. Remarkably, this is the only place in the world where storks nest directly on sea cliffs, making the Costa Vicentina truly unique.
The Costa Vicentina Walking Tour begins with a visit to the Carrapateira Sea and Land Museum, where you will learn about the history, cultural development, ecology and traditional livelihoods of the region. From here, the walk continues inland, allowing you to observe the predominant vegetation, especially Cistus ladanifer (commonly known as gum rockrose), before heading back towards the coastline, where the Atlantic Ocean meets towering cliffs, creating an outstanding and dramatic landscape.
A specialized local guide will accompany you throughout the walk, showing you the most beautiful spots and explaining what you are observing and the surrounding environment, enriching your experience with expert insight and local knowledge.
In the Costa Vicentina Walking Tour, you will discover a place where nature and history merge, creating impressive coastal landscapes, while enjoying a pleasant and immersive walking experience. Certainly a great highlight of your holidays in Portugal.
