The Ria Formosa Natural Park is one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal. This protected area is characterized by extensive coastal sandy dunes that shelter a vast lagoon system stretching along the coastline from Ancão to Castro Marim. The unique interaction between freshwater rivers, tidal estuaries and salt marshes creates an idyllic and impressive landscape of dunes, barrier islands and winding waterways, forming a vital natural refuge for birdlife and wildlife.
The walking tour begins near Garrão Beach and heads directly into the Ria Formosa Natural Park, where you will enjoy a walk alongside the lagoon system and observe a wide variety of bird species such as flamingos, purple swamphens, kingfishers, grey herons, little egrets, storks and many others. You may also spot other wildlife, including chameleons, turtles, the Uca tangeri crab, and more, all in their natural habitat.
The route continues through the Ludo salt marshes, passing by Roman ruins that remain in the area, adding a strong historical dimension to the walk. The final part of the tour follows the beach and Atlantic coastline, offering beautiful seaside scenery and a relaxing end to the experience.
