Cycling Path Danube 2018: Classic Version Passau – Viena




This bicycle tour along the Danube from Passau to Vienna excites cyclists from all over the world. Uniformly signage and well developed cycle tracks lead you through a varied landscape with a lot of cultural treasuries.
You start the trip in the “Three Rivers City” Passau, which is located in the southeast of Germany at the Austria border. Following the Danube you soon reach its’ famous meander-formed river bed in Schlögen, which has been appointed a „Natural Wonder of Austria“. You continue cycling and pass by Linz (European Capital of Culture in 2009) and the important pilgrimage site in Maria Taferl till you reach the vineyards and castles of the Wachau (World Culture and Natural Heritage of UNESCO). Worth seeing are for example the Benedictine abbey in Melk, the baroque townscape in Dürnstein and the historic centre of Krems. The last stage leads you past the Roman town Tulln to the metropolis of Vienna.

Cycling Path Danube 2018: Classic Version Passau – Viena


Day 1 - Passau

Individual arrival in Passau. Hand over of rental bikes and travel documents.
Overnight at a 4*hotel in Passau.
Welcome briefing in Passau: every in Saturday & Sunday in July & August at 18.00 h in English language.


Day 2 - Schlögen (43 km)

Passing Obernzell and Engelhartszell, you cycle through the deep gorge that have been cut out of the Bavarian Woodland, passing castles and pretty villages towards to Kramesau and further on to Au. Cross the Danube by ferry (payable on spot) to your very nice situated hotel.
Overnight at the 4*hotel Donauschlinge.


Day 3 - Linz (58 km)

From the most famous part of the Danube, the “Schlögener Schlinge”, start a delightful day of cycling through an area of outstanding natural beauty to Aschach and further on to Linz.
Overnight at a 4*hotel in Linz.


Day 4 - Perg (42 km)

Short tour to St. Florian - monastery and pilgrimage site where Anton Bruckner is buried beneath the famous Bruckner organ. Continue the route via Enns, the oldest town of Austria, which boasts not only Roman but also Baroque and Renaissance heritage. Cross the Danube by ferry from Enns to Mauthausen (included) and cycle to Perg.
Overnight at a 3*hotel in Perg.


Day 5 - Marbach/Maria Taferl (58 km)

Through woodland and orchards towards Grein. The approach to the town takes you through the “eye of the needle”, a narrow stretch of valley once feared by sailors, and passes the imposing Greinburg castle. Passing the Habsburg-castle Persenbeug you cycle to Marbach, where a transfer to the hotel in Maria Taferl (situated above the Danube-valley) is organised.

Day 6 - Krems (46 km by bike / 20 km by boat)

Cycle tour through the Strudengau to Melk (famous abbey); by boat (included) to Spitz and through the vineyards of the “Wachau” you pass the romantic town of Dürnstein, with its castle (Richard the Lionharted was imprisoned there) further on to Krems (Roman town).
Overnight at a 4*hotel in Krems.


Day 7 - Vienna, (43 km by bike, 36 km/30 min. by train)

Via Mautern, through a green valley (vegetable growing-area for whole Austria) to Tulln. There you give back the rental bikes and go individually by train (runs every 30 minutes till 6 p.m.; payable on the spot; approx. 9€ pp excl. bike) to Vienna;
Overnight stay at a 4*hotel in the centre of Vienna.


Day 8 - end of cycle trip

Booking of additional nights or journey home.

SPECIAL-SERVICE “Vienna guarantee”:
If clients – for whatever reason f. e. weather, fitness, etc. – want to quit the bike tour, they can spend the remaining days of their holidays in Vienna at a 4????hotel with good underground connection to the city centre. Clients need to contact us until 3 p.m. on the previous day. Journey to Vienna, luggage transfer single-handed.
