We walk through the Serra do Caldeirão Mountains, the region that connects the Algarve to the Alentejo. Despite its modest altitude — with the highest point reaching 589 metres — this area offers a distinctive landscape, where rounded hills are shaped by a dense network of streams, mostly formed by seasonal watercourses.
In the fields of these mountains, you will find almond, carob and olive trees, while near the valleys and watercourses grow orange and loquat trees. The almond and orange trees were introduced by the Arabs, who played a key role in shaping the region’s current settlement pattern — a landscape of small, scattered villages deeply rooted in tradition.
For centuries, local communities rarely travelled to the coast. News from the outside world and essential products such as fish and salt were brought inland by people travelling on pack animals, reinforcing the region’s strong sense of isolation and self-sufficiency.
A specialized guide will accompany you throughout the walk, leading you to the most beautiful spots and explaining what you observe, as well as the natural and cultural surroundings.
The Serra do Caldeirão Walking Tour takes you back to ancient times, where life moves at a slower pace, making this experience a truly authentic and memorable highlight of your holidays in the Algarve.
