Cycling ATLANTIC ROUTE Óbidos to Lisboa - 7 nights | 6 stages

 

Day 1 – Arrival in Óbidos

A Medieval Storybook Village Awaiting Your Discovery

Welcome to Óbidos, one of Portugal’s most enchanting medieval towns,  a place where time seems to stand still.

Enclosed by ancient castle walls, Óbidos invites you to wander through a maze of cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses covered in bougainvillea.

Small artisan shops, traditional taverns and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding hills create an atmosphere full of charm and authenticity.
Take your time to explore the castle walls or enjoy a quiet drink in the village square.

With its history, colours and unique ambiance, Óbidos sets the perfect tone for the beginning of your Atlantic cycling adventure.

 

Day 2 – Óbidos to Peniche (49 km)

Day 3 – Peniche to Santa Cruz (49 km)

Golden Beaches, Marine Winds and Endless Atlantic Views

Follow one of the most scenic stretches of the Portuguese coastline.

Today’s ride takes you past Baleal and Consolação, areas shaped by powerful waves and a deep connection to the sea.

Surfers, fishermen and wide-open beaches give this region a lively yet natural atmosphere.
The landscape alternates between cliffs, dunes and long sandy beaches, with panoramic views that invite you to pause and admire the Atlantic.

As you approach Santa Cruz, limestone cliffs and rock formations rise above the sea, creating a dramatic backdrop.
Santa Cruz welcomes you with a wide golden-sand beach, fresh ocean air and an unforgettable sunset,  a peaceful end to a day filled with rich coastal scenery

Day 4 – Ovar to Aveiro (38 km)

Surf Spirit, Fishing Heritage and Slow Coastal Life

Your day begins along quiet rural roads and gentle farmland before the coastline reappears on the horizon.

Arriving in Ericeira, you enter Europe’s only World Surfing Reserve,  a unique blend of surf culture, centuries-old fishing traditions and charming Portuguese architecture.
Ericeira’s narrow cobbled streets, blue-and-white houses and ocean-view squares create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

It is a town that breathes the sea. Sit by the waterfront, watch surfers catching perfect waves or enjoy fresh seafood while taking in the Atlantic breeze.
Its relaxed charm and incredible coastal views make Ericeira an unforgettable stop along your journey

Day 5 – Ericeira to Azenhas do Mar (34 km)

Cliffs, Secluded Beaches and One of Portugal’s Most Magical Villages

Today’s stage is pure coastal drama.

Cycle along rugged cliffs, quiet beaches and hidden coves that appear like natural jewels along the Atlantic.

This section of the route offers some of the most breathtaking views of the entire journey.
Your destination, Azenhas do Mar, is a village suspended on a cliff overlooking the ocean,  a place that looks like it belongs on a postcard. Its white house’s cascading down the cliffside, the natural tidal pool shaped by the sea and the dramatic scenery make this a truly magical place to spend the night.
It is one of Portugal’s most photographed and admired coastal villages,  and for good reason
.

 

Day 6 – Azenhas do Mar de Cascais (43 km)

Sintra’s Wild Coast and Europe’s Westernmost Point

Continue south along Sintra’s spectacular coastline, a region where jagged cliffs meet the powerful Atlantic.

The ride to Cabo da Roca,   the westernmost point of mainland Europe,  is one of the highlights of the journey, offering panoramic ocean views and a symbolic sense of reaching the “edge of the continent.”
The following kilometres lead you toward Cascais, an elegant seaside town known for its refined yet relaxed atmosphere.

With its marina, beautiful beaches and historic centre, Cascais offers the perfect blend of nature, sophistication and coastal charm.

Day 7 – Cascais to Lisbon (42 km)

A Smooth Ride Along the Tagus Into Portugal’s Vibrant Capital

Your final cycling stage follows the scenic waterfront along the Tagus estuary,   a beautiful route lined with beaches, promenades and panoramic viewpoints.

As you approach Lisbon, the journey becomes even more iconic.
Cycle past the Belém Tower, the Discoveries Monument and the striking architecture of the MAAT museum before crossing into the heart of Lisbon.

Entering the city by bike gives you a unique perspective on Portugal’s capital, vibrant, historic, full of life and the perfect finale to your Atlantic adventure.

 

Day 8 – Departure

A Warm and Memorable Farewell

Spend a final morning exploring Lisbon’s historic neighbourhoods, enjoying a last Portuguese pastry or simply relaxing in one of the city’s sunny terraces. Take with you unforgettable memories of your journey from medieval Óbidos to the heart of Portugal’s capital.
