Human presence in this territory may date back to the Middle Paleolithic, as archaeological remains from this period have been discovered in recent years. However, it was during the Neolithic period (5000 BC to 3000 BC) that megalith-building communities settled throughout the region, leaving a lasting mark on the landscape and cultural heritage.
From Alcoutim, where Portugal borders Spain along the emblematic Guadiana River, we walk through the Baixo Guadiana region, enjoying the unique beauty of the natural Algarve while meeting local communities and traditional craftsmen in small rural villages. Along the banks of the Guadiana River, the route follows an ancient path used between the 1950s and 1970s by the fiscal brigade in the fight against smuggling from the Spanish side, adding a fascinating historical dimension to the walk.
