Ria Formosa Natural Park, located in the Algarve, southern Portugal, is a protected natural area covering more than 170 km² and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal. This exceptional nature reserve is an important stopover for hundreds of bird species and is largely defined by its lagoon system of barrier islands, which communicates with the Atlantic Ocean through six natural inlets. Stretching for over 60 km, the park reaches its maximum width near the city of Faro, at approximately 6 km.
This guided bike tour starts in Quinta do Lago and heads directly into Ria Formosa Natural Park, allowing you to cycle alongside the lagoon system and observe a wide variety of bird species, including Flamingos, Purple Swamphens, Kingfishers, Grey Herons, Little Egrets, Storks, and many others. Along the route, you may also encounter local wildlife such as chameleons, turtles and the Uca tangeri crab, all in their natural habitat.
The tour continues through Faro Island, a traditional fishing village, where you can observe the natural inlet between Faro Island and Desert Island, a vital passage that allows ocean waters to flow into the lagoon system. The final section of the ride passes through the Ludo Saltpans and the remaining Roman ruins, adding a historical dimension to this immersive nature experience.
A specialized local guide will accompany you throughout the tour, pointing out the most scenic spots and explaining the local ecosystems, wildlife and surroundings.
On this Ria Formosa Bike Tour, you will have the opportunity to observe the park’s rich biodiversity while enjoying a relaxed and enjoyable cycling experience in nature.
Certainly one of the highlights of your holidays in the Algarve.
