The trip begins in Münster and takes you through the green Münsterland to behind the Teutoburg Forest and back. Apart from cycling the different legs of the tour that offer plenty of variety, the downtown areas of Münster and Osnabrück are the perfect place to wander and stay a while. You can also spend the rest of your day hiking through the Dörenth Cliffs past the "Hockenden Weib" (Squatting Wench). You will stay in excellent hotels located in the downtown walking distance from the city centre or in typical "Westphalian" hotels between the cities of peace. Small cafés and restaurants along the path are the perfect place to relax and recharge your batteries.
The price includes a visit to the two Friedenssäle (halls of peace).
As the Münsterländer say: "Töfte mit der Leeze über die Pätkets pieseln"– Be sure to cycle along hidden paths.
Day 1 - Arrival in Münster
Check-in at the hotel and time for a first walk through the town of Münster, from the hotel within a few minutes walk. A visit to the historic town hall and the Friedenssaal is recommended. Here on 15 May 1648 was solemnly closed the Peace of Münster, which ended the Thirty Years‘ War. This was preceded by five years of negotiations in the form of a peace conference, which met in the cities of Münster and Osnabrück.
Day 2 - Münster – Ostbevern (Cycling 32 km / 20 miles)
The first enjoyable leg of your tour today will take you from Münster through Telgte and Ostbevern to the Landhotel Beverland. It was the first international congress in which almost every European power was represented and essentially fixed the end of all hostilities. Leave Münster heading north through the woods and meadows, cross the Werse River to reach the charming city of Telgte. Then you cycle through the picturesque parklandscape to the village Ostbevern. In this small village in Westphalia, many cafes, restaurants and ice cream parlors invite you for a rest before you cover the last kilometers to your hotel.
Day 3 - Ostbevern – Hagen at Teutoburg Forest (Cycling 39 km / 24 miles)
The tour today leads from Ostbevern through the villages Glandorf, Bad Laer and Bad Iburg until shortly before at Teutoburger Forest. The first 18 kilometers you cycle past fields, farms and wooded sections. Breathe deeply to enjoy the good fresh air and quiet nature. With an eye on streams, woods and cottages you reach Glandorf, the first village in Lower Saxony on this trip. Immediately thereafter, you will meet the spa town of Bad Laer where 2 large saltwater baths invite you to relax. Then it goes to Bad Iburg, another spa which has its focus on the teachings of Sebastian Kneipp. Several Kneipp basins are publicly accessible. Strengthen your best again in Bad Iburg, as you then drive a bit uphill through the Teutoburg Forest. The last kilometers to the hotel then go almost by itself downhill.
Day 4 - Hagen at Teutoburger Forest – Osnabrück (Cycling 16 km / 10 miles)
The shortest leg of this journey takes you past the edge of the Teutoburg Forest, through the village of Holzhausen to the city center of Osnabrück. To have enough time to visit the city, this stage takes you on the direct cycle route to Osnabrück and is kept relatively short. The first kilometers to Holzhausen will accompany you gently uphill and downhill. After crossing the small river Düte you reach Sutthausen, which is already a district of Osnabrück. From here you cycle on a sloping track to the center of Osnabrück. Your hotel is located on the inner city ring only six minutes walk from the historic city hall Osnabrück, where the Peace Hall is located. Further sights in the city center are the Tear Fountain, the Haarmannsbrunnen, the St. Peter Cathedral, the Lederhof and the Diözesanmuseum with the cathedral treasury. Of course, the city center also off ers many nice stores, boutiques, cafes and restaurants.
Day 5 - Osnabrück – Ibbenburen (Cycling 30 km / 19 miles)
The stage takes you from Osnabrück through Lotte, Velpe, Laggenbeck to the edge of Ibbenburen. Th e fi rst part leads you out of Osnabrück through the Hakenhof wood, over the river Rüte along forests and meadows to Lotte.
By the way, you cross the federal state border and are back in NRW. Th e next settlement, Velpen, is known for its still working watermill, where organic cereals are milled, which is then baked into bread in a traditional stone oven. Furthermore, there is a picture gallery of the Velper painter Gustav Künnemann in the mill. Both the gallery and the mill can be visited. Afterwards you drive parallel to the Hirschbach to Laggenbeck and further on to Ibbenburen to your hotel. Th is is located in the immediate vicinity of the summer toboggan run with a fairy tale wood and the imposing Dörenther cliff s, a popular hiking destination.
Day 6 - Ibbenburen – Steinfurt (Cycling 43 km / 27 miles)
You cycle from Ibbenbüren through the Emsauen to Emsdetten and then through the Münsterland park landscape to Steinfurt. You will head on downhill paths to the heart of the Münsterland. It‘s a short leg along the Dortmund-Canal before you reach a nature reserve near Saerbeck. You drive across the village until you reach a natural swimming lake. Afterwards you will meet the Ems, which will accompany you to Emsdetten. Emsdetten offers various options for rest and also the Münsterland Gallery of Contemporary Fine Arts (admission free). You continue through the city park of Emsdetten, back into the countryside along many farmsteads to Borghorst, a district of Steinfurt, where your hotel is located. It is known for its delicious roast goose. A highlight is the castle Burgsteinfurt 5 km away. Th e oldest Westphalian castle from the 12th century. A visit is only possible from the outside
Day 7 - Steinfurt – Münster (Cycling 31 km / 19 miles)
The last stage leads through Nordwalde, Altenberge and the quarter Nienberge back to Münster. It is possible to extend the stage and visit the castle Hülshoff . The fi rst part you cycle through Borghorst to then drive through the park landscape to Nordwalde. Nordwalde is home to the more than 100-year-old St. Francis‘s House, a more than 2,000-year-old Baroque organ in the St. Dionysius Church and the Bispinghof, a 12th-century Gräftehof, which served as the Amtshof for the bishop of Münster.
The path to the neighboring Altenberge leads you past small farms and through woods and fi elds. Around the church of Altenberge there are some ways to strengthen. In Altenberge you can decide whether to drive back to Münster or continue to Burg Hülshoff , the birthplace and childhood home of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff . Since 2012 it is possible to visit the castle from the inside and enjoy a meal in the castle yard. Haus Vögdeding and Haus Rüschhaus are two other estates worth seeing on the route.
