Then you will visit the Mauritshuis Museum. There you will see unique masterpieces by the Dutch painters of the Golden Age, such as Vermeer’s ‚Girl a Pearl Earirng’, one of the largest and most significant collections in the World. Then continue by bike to the Peace Palace, the seat of the International Court of Justice. The Visitor Centre has a permanent exhibition about the history of the peace movement and the institutions seated there. After all of today’s culture, there is still fun to be had staying in the city with a drink on one of the many café terraces or a little shopping in the city centre.

Day 5 - Leiden (Cycling 48 km / 30 miles)

Today’s destination is the town of Leiden across dykes along small lakes. Here you will be cycling through a bustling historic town with plenty of cultural highlights. But your evening meal on a terrace with everything going on around you is also one of your options. You will cycle back to the hotel through the green landscape along the ‘Kager Plassen’, a small system of lakes and through wealthy Wassenaar, a suburb of The Hague.

Leiden

The town has a rich history, lots of museums, theatres and a pleasant town centre. The town has the university to thank for its prosperity. It was founded by William of Orange after Leiden had been heavily besieged by the Spanish. Leiden is now a vibrant student town. Leiden is also known as a town of knowledge with several museums such as the National Museum of Ethnology, the National Museum of Antiquities, the ‘Naturalis’ (Natural History Museum) and the Boerhaave Museum with its natural and medical history collection. Many of these museums have direct ties with the university, just like Leiden Observatory and the Botanical Gardens (Hortus Botanicus)

Day 6 - Rotterdam (Cycling 46 km / 29 miles)

Today you will be cycling to Rotterdam, the largest port city in the world. The route from Rijswijk via Delft takes you through countryside towards the sprawling metropolis. Discover the diversity of Rotterdam by bike. On through the centre to the boulevard along Nieuwe Maas. The town of Schiedam, known for its many distilleries, comes into sight with the fresh breeze along the river. Leaving the dyke along Nieuwe Maas, you first cycle through the centre of Schiedam and then over the dykes along the waterway and through the green polders back to Delft and your hotel in Rijswijk.

Rotterdam

Rotterdam is a city with lots of history. A port city with vibrant nightlife, a chic shopping area, and a trendy artist’s quarter. Rotterdam is also the Netherlands’s most architecturally significant with a constantly changing skyline. The centre and its surroundings have opportunities for shopping, great food, and plenty of museums and attractions. The Euromast, a trip round the port, the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, the romantic quarter of Delfshaven, the Cube houses and the Van Nelle Factory are only some of the options for visiting.

Day 7 - Delft (Cycling 34 km / 22 miles)

Today’s stretch takes you cycling along the Driemanspolder to the dyke where the remains of windmills are reminders of a time when the polders still had to pumped dry. Cycling through Nootdorp takes you to today’s destination, the historic town of Delft, a bustling student town with a particularly lovely old town, romantic green ‘hofjes’, and many small canals. Here you take your time discovering the town. You cycle back to your hotel in Rijswijk through the countryside around Delft.

Delft

Delft and the Dutch Royal Family are inextricably linked with each other. Since William of Orange, nearly all members have been buried in the Nieuwe Kerk burial chambers. Nieuwe Kerk in Delft is in the centre of the town. At 108.75 metres, the spire is the highest in the Netherlands after the cathedral tower in Utrecht. The church is also known for the grave of William of Orange.

If you find the route too demanding or want to save time, just take a train to Rijswijk station. There are numerous ways of taking the train on the route between Rotterdam, Schiedam, Delft and Rijswijk. You can also take the train from Leiden to your hotel in Rijswijk.
