This cycle tour from Vienna to Budapest along the Danube Cycle Path, as extension of the famous bike trail Passau-Vienna, is the best choice for cycle lovers who are willing to dive into the culture of the Eastern states and wants to experience the beauty of three capital cities and the impressive natural parks on the way. You start the trip in the famous city of Waltz “Vienna” and continue through various national parks to Bratislava, with its castle and many churches provides the knowledge of the local history. Further on, partly on the Hungarian side and partly on the Slovakian side of the Danube, through picturesque villages and cities like Esztergom with its impressing cathedral and the Danube Bend to the destination of this trip – Budapest - where it is advisable to extend the stay for visiting all the countless sights.

DAY 1 - Arrival in Vienna

Overnight stay at the 4* hotel NH-Danube City, Park Inn or same category.

 

DAY 2 - Vienna to Bratislava (68 KM)

Handover of rental bikes – close to the Danube cycle path. Soon you will find yourself in the verdancy of the national park “Donauauen”. Passing Schönau and Orth to the Habsburg castle of Eckartsau. A detour to Festschloss Hof (Hof castle) is recommended. The magnificent castle, which was built at the behest of the Austrian empress Maria Theresia, its impressive park (65,000 m2) and the gorgeous architectural monuments are definitely worth a visit. Via Hainburg to Bratislava.

Overnight stay at a 4* hotel in Bratislava.

 

DAY 3 - Bratislava to Mosonmagyaróvár (45 KM)

Free time to do some sight-seeing in Bratislava; you leave the capital of Slovakia while cycling along a very beautiful riparian cycling path. You continue cycling and soon cross the Slovakian/Hungarian frontier near Kunov?; via Dunasziget (the village was located on an island in the middle of the Danube) you reach the small town of Mosonmagyaróvár.

Overnight stay at a good 3* middle-class hotel.

 

DAY 4 - Mosonmagyaróvár to Györ (45 KM)

Cycle tour to Hedervár (castle) and further on, partly along the idyllic Danube to Györ, the “metropolis” of West-Hungary. Individual sightseeing in Györ.

DAY 5 - Györ to Komárno (64 KM)

On the country road to the border HU/SK, to Medvedov and on the very beautiful Slovakian bank to the baroque city Cicov and further via Zlatna to the Slovakian/ Hungarian city Komárom/Komárno.

Overnight stay at a 3* hotel in Komárno.

 

DAY 6 - Komárno to Visegrád (69 KM)

Over the bridge back to the Slovakian part of the city; passing the Roman fort Kelemantia and lonesome farming villages, where time seems to stand still, you reach Mo?a and the twin village of Štúrovo/Esztergom; across the well-known Gisela-bridge to Esztergom (possibility to visit the cathedral); at the right bank of the Danube all the way until the village Bùbàntvölgy, following again the cycle path for approx. 4.5 km. Cycle tour down to the ferry (signed at the cycle path). Cycling along at the left bank of the Danube until Nagymaros, catching a ferry boat (to be paid directly at the ferry station) to Visegrád.

Overnight stay at the 4* thermal hotel.

 

DAY 7 - Visegrád to Budapest (45 KM)

Cycle tour to Szentendre-Island. You continue the tour again by ferry to Szentendre-city (about 20 km before Budapest). Individual sight-seeing.

From Szentendre, you have 3 options:

  • Option 1: Delivery of the rental bikes from Szentendre city; there you catch the local train to Budapest - 25 km cycling.
  • Option 2: In the late afternoon by boat to Budapest (departure 5.00 p.m. in Szentendre) - 25 km cycling.
  • Option 3: By bike to the Hungarian capital Budapest - 45 km cycling.

Overnight stay at a 4* hotel. 

 

DAY 8 - End of Cycle Trip

Extra night(s) in Budapest or return journey home.
